Michelle Obama has compared Donald Trump to a neglectful parent who lets their children gorge on sweets all day and stay up late.
The former first lady used the parenting allegory to compare her husband’s presidency to that of his successor.
“I think what we see is what happens when we take things for granted. For the eight years Barack was president, it was like having the ‘good parent’ at home,” she said at the Simmons Leadership Conference in Boston. “The responsible parent, the one who told you to eat your
carrots and go to bed on time. And now we have the other parent. We thought it’d feel fun, maybe it feels fun for now because we can eat candy all day and stay up late, and not follow the rules.”
It is rare when an ideology diffe-rence is explained as clearly as Michelle Obama did with her
latest statement. For this we say, thank you Michelle for making my point. Using the most common names of the different political thoughts, progressives and conservatives, she defines her point of view as if the executive power’s role is to guide “we the people” as if we were children. She completely misses the point. In the system that our forefathers established, and that has been eroded in the last decades, the power of governance rested in the population, not in the elected officials. Indeed, neither Obama nor Trump was voted in to be our “parents”, just our employees.
We are able to choose eating carrots or candy if we so desire and do not need Obama to force carrots upon us, or Trump to give us candy. What is required of our Presidents is to assure us the availability of food, shelter, education, and healthcare, and equal opportunity to seek these necessities when and if we desire. We are not deplorable, uneducated, dumb, lazy, and/or unable to fend for ourselves. We do not wish to give a third party, our government, and our earnings so they can give us what we are able to acquire by ourselves.
We will eat candy and if we develop diabetes, we should pay our medical bills. If we would accept Obama’s ideas, or other so called progressives, a ruse name for socialists, we would be giving him the authority to live our lives, force feed us “carrots” and make us submissive to his wishes and control. That is for socialism the end game. “We will think for you, decide for you, and in return promise that you will have your basic needs met”.
What they don’t make clear is that what they really desire is to take away your freedom let you live a meager life, as they enjoy the riches derived from your work. We are a country of immigrants. They came to this country to seek opportunity to achieve and individual freedom to do so. Has the purpose of our newcomers change to some that only desire opportunity to receive, and are accustomed to forego their individual freedom? If so, and only so, the dream of our creators would disappear and their worst fears come to pass. Is Trump’s unlikely victory representing a calling call from those Americans in the “Red States” that many of us are not resigned to lose our rights?
Are the citizens that value a definition of freedom as one that not only assures that you are responsible for yourself, but by the same token it also makes you accept others as they are including gender, race and sexual orientation still the majority?. Can we espouse free trade, leadership starting at the lowest level, from individuals, to families, to communities, leaving the central government with fewer responsabilies, as defense, infrastructure, etc.?
Are we the same “we the people” that believe in hard work, family unit, responsibility for our children, compassion for the less fortunate, in no discrimination, that whatever many tell us we don’t mind a football team using the Redskins name, know that people with a penis are called men, and with a vagina women, that believing in God is a positive not negative behavior, and reject “political correctness” as an excuse for censorship?
If so, and if we are still the majority willing to have our voices heard, there is hope for this Nation, if not you better enjoy eating carrots.
