Este 5 de marzo se conmemora otro aniversario del natalicio de la querida y reconocida actriz y declamadora cubana Eusebia Cosme. Nacida en Santiago de Cuba el 5 de marzo de 1908, Eusebia Adriana Cosme Almanza comenzó su carrera en Cuba, y en 1938 emigró a Nueva York. Allí se presentó en diversos sitios, como el Carnegie Hall y The Town Hall. Entre 1943 y 1945 tuvo su propio programa de radio, The Eusebia Cosme Show, en CBS Radio. Durante su larga carrera artística se dio a conocer extensamente por interpretar el papel de “Mamá Dolores” en la obra El Derecho de Nacer, novela de Félix B. Caignet. Protagonizó este papel en teatro en Nueva York, y luego en la telenovela y en película de 1966, por cuya actuación recibió un Premio Ónix como mejor actriz. En 1964 comenzó a trabajar en cine y televisión, y vivió en la Ciudad de México desde 1966 hasta 1973. Actuó en películas como The Pawnbroker (1964) y Rosas blancas para mi hermana negra (1970). Vivió sus últimos años en Miami, donde falleció el 11 de julio de 1976, dejando una gran huella en la cultura cubana dentro y fuera de su patria.

Remembering Eusebia Cosme (1908-1976)

This March 5th marks another anniversary of the birth of beloved and renowned Cuban actress and declaimer Eusebia Cosme. Born in Santiago de Cuba on March 5, 1908, Eusebia Adriana Cosme Almanza began her career in Cuba, and in 1938 she emigrated to New York. There, she performed in different places, like Carnegie Hall and The Town Hall. Between 1943 and 1945, she had her own radio show, The Eusebia Cosme Show, on CBS Radio. During her long artistic career, she became well known for her role as “Mamá Dolores” in Félix B. Caignet’s novel, El Derecho de Nacer. She played the role in theater in New York, and later in the soap opera and 1966 film of the same name, for which she received an Ónix Award for best actress. In 1964, she began to work in film and television, and she lived in Mexico City from 1966 until 1973. She acted in films like The Pawnbroker (1964) and White Roses for my Black Sister (1970). She lived the last years of her life in Miami, where she passed away on July 11, 1976, leaving behind a significant imprint on Cuban culture within her homeland and abroad.
