Miami Beach: Home to Cuban Presidents
This month, the City of Miami Beach celebrates another anniversary of its incorporation. During its colorful and interesting history, several Cuban presidents called Miami Beach home. Most arrived at its shores as exiles from the political turbulence of their eras. During the early 1930s, former President Mario G. Menocal was exiled in Miami Beach during President Gerardo Machado Morales’ government, where he lived in a home located on Collins Avenue and Lincoln Road. The home served as a meeting place of the former President’s supporters. Following his resignation, President Machado himself lived in Miami Beach, where he passed away on March 29, 1939. Years later, former President Ramón Grau San Martín lived at the Laveeda Apartments (Ocean Drive and 4th Street) with his family. President Fulgencio Batista Zaldívar also visited the city to attend an event for the Rotary Club. Former President Carlos Prío Socarrás lived several of his exiles in Miami Beach. One of these began in May of 1956, and lasted until his return to Cuba in 1959. During this period, he first lived at the Lucerne Hotel (4101 Collins Avenue) and then moved to the Vendome Hotel. His final exile took place following Fidel Castro’s rise to power. Prío lived in his home (5070 Alton Road) until he passed away at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in 1977. Although a part of South Florida’s colorful tapestry, Miami Beach will always be closely linked to Cuban history.
