Este mes se cumple el 45 aniversario del fallecimiento del líder del exilio cubano Manuel Artime Buesa, en el año en que también se conmemora el 90 aniversario de su natalicio. Nacido en Camagüey el 29 de enero de 1932, Artime estudió medicina en la Universidad de La Habana. Luchó activamente contra el gobierno de Fulgencio Batista, y tras su ruptura con el régimen castrista en 1959 comenzó a luchar en su contra. Al año siguiente organizó el Movimiento de Recuperación Revolucionaria (MRR), uno de los primeros grupos clandestinos en la lucha anti-castrista. Al mismo tiempo fue miembro del Consejo Revolucionario Cubano y, en 1961, fue el líder político y militar de la Brigada de Asalto 2506 y figura clave en la invasión de Bahía de Cochinos. Fue capturado junto a los demás brigadistas, y tras su liberación partió al exilio en Miami, donde falleció el 17 de noviembre de 1977 a los 45 años. Hoy, el legado de lucha de Artime sigue inspirando a nuevas generaciones de cubanos.

Dr. Manuel Artime Buesa: Two anniversaries

This month marks the 45th anniversary of the passing of Cuban exile leader Manuel Artime Buesa, in a year that also marks the 90th anniversary of his birth. Born in Camagüey on January 29, 1932, Artime studied medicine at the University of Havana. He actively fought against the government of Fulgencio Batista, and after his break with the Castro regime in 1959 began to fight against it. The following year he organized the Revolutionary Recovery Movement (MRR), one of the first clandestine groups in the anti-Castro struggle. At the same time, he was a member of the Cuban Revolutionary Council and, in 1961, was the political and military leader of Assault Brigade 2506 and a key figure in the Bay of Pigs invasion. He was captured along with the other Brigade members, and after his release went into exile in Miami, where he passed away on November 17, 1977 at the age of 45. Today, Artime’s legacy of struggle continues to inspire new generations of Cubans.
