Este mes se conmemora el centenario del natalicio de la cantante y actriz española Lola Flores. Nacida en Jerez de la Frontera, España, el 21 de enero de 1923, La Faraona, como la conocían sus admiradores, tuvo vínculos muy estrechos con Cuba, a donde viajó en tres ocasiones (1952, 1953 y 1956). Conoció a grandes figuras musicales cubanas de la época como Benny Moré, Rita Montaner y Rolando Laserie, y entabló una gran amistad con Celia Cruz y Olga Guillot. En el gran homenaje que se le hizo en Miami en 1990, Celia Cruz declaró: “En los años 50, 60, cuando llegábamos los artistas a España, y sobre todo artistas cubanos, era esta señora la que nos abría los brazos.” Muy emocionada, Lola Flores expresó: “Yo fui un ídolo en esa tierra. Trabajé en Montmartre, trabajé en el Teatro América, trabajé en el Payret, y fui un ídolo en La Habana. ¡Por eso no he vuelto más!” Flores falleció en Alcobendas, Madrid, España el 16 de mayo de 1995, pero aún vive en la memoria de sus aficionados, incluyendo a tantos cubanos que la recuerdan con cariño.

“The Pharaoh at 100”

This month marks the centennial of the birth of Spanish singer and actress Lola Flores. Born in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, on January 21, 1923, The Pharaoh, as she was known to her fans, had very close ties to Cuba, where she traveled three times (1952, 1953 and 1956). She met some of the era’s great Cuban musical figures, such as Benny Moré, Rita Montaner, and Rolando Laserie, and established a great friendship with Celia Cruz and Olga Guillot. In the great tribute that was made in Miami in 1990, Celia Cruz declared: «In the 50s, 60s, when we artists arrived in Spain, and especially Cuban artists, it was this lady who opened her arms to us.» Very excited, Lola Flores expressed: «I was an idol in that land. I worked in Montmartre, I worked at the Teatro América, I worked at the Payret, and I was an idol in Havana. That’s why I haven’t gone back anymore!» Flores died in Alcobendas, Madrid, Spain on May 16, 1995, but she still lives in the memory of her fans, including so many Cubans who remember her fondly.
