Esta semana, la reconocida organización no gubernamental (ONG) de escritores PEN Internacional celebra su 90º Congreso Anual en Oxford, Reino Unido. Los escritores cubanos libres siempre han buscado y recibido el apoyo y el amparo de dicha organización. En 1945, Jorge Mañach reunió a otros escritores para fundar el PEN Club de Cuba en La Habana. La dictadura castrista acabó con esta y otras organizaciones cívicas, y muchos de sus miembros tuvieron que partir al exilio. En 1997, el poeta Ángel Cuadra, junto a otros autores cubanos exiliados, fundó el PEN Club de Escritores Cubanos en el Exilio, así dando voz a los escritores cubanos perseguidos, exiliados y encarcelados ante el mundo entero.

This week, PEN International, the renowned writers’ non-governmental organization (NGO), is celebrating its 90th Annual Congress in Oxford, United Kingdom. Free Cuban writers have always sought and received the support and protection of this organization. In 1945, Jorge Mañach brought together other writers to establish the PEN Club of Cuba in Havana. The Castro dictatorship put an end to this and other civic organizations, and many of its members went into exile. In 1997, poet Ángel Cuadra, along with other exiled Cuban authors, founded the PEN Club of Cuban Writers in Exile, thus giving voice to persecuted, exiled, and imprisoned Cuban writers before the entire world.
