Rosa Amalia Hernández de Portela, amada hija, esposa, madre, abuela, bisabuela y amiga, falleció pacíficamente el 15 de agosto de 2024, precisamente en el día de la Asunción, rodeada de sus amadas hijas, yernos, su ángel especial en la tierra, Aura, y sus queridos nietos y bisnietos. Nacida el 17 de diciembre de 1930 en La Habana, Cuba, Rosa Amalia deja un legado de amor y servicio que será recordado por todos los que la conocieron. Su amor por Dios, por la familia, por los amigos y por los necesitados era evidente en todo lo que hacía.

 Erudita y atleta, Rosa Amalia se graduó de la prestigiosa escuela católica femenina Las Dominicas Francesas el 20 de junio de 1948. Conoció a su esposo, Julio Francisco Portela Agramonte, su primer y único novio, mejor amigo y el amor de su vida. Juntos dieron la bienvenida al mundo a tres hijos: dos hijas, Mari Tere y Lourdes, y un hijo, Julio César, quien lamentablemente falleció a la temprana edad de 15 años en un accidente en 1975.

 En 1961, Rosa Amalia y su familia partieron de su amada patria en busca de libertad, encontrando un nuevo hogar en los EE.UU. Su espíritu de resiliencia y compromiso con el servicio florecieron en su nuevo país, al que amaba mucho, y en particular en Miami. Comenzó a trabajar en el Variety Children’s Hospital, ahora conocido como Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, donde se desempeñó como secretaria de sala de la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (ICU por sus siglas en inglés). Fundó y presidió un comité dedicado a recaudar fondos para apoyar a los niños cubanos y otros niños que necesitaban tratamiento médico.

Más tarde, Rosa Amalia fue contratada por un reconocido pediatra para ser la directora de su oficina, donde trabajó hasta que se jubiló. Forjó vínculos especiales con los niños y brindó consuelo a los padres que atravesaban situaciones difíciles de salud con sus hijos.

A raíz de la trágica y prematura muerte de su hijo Julio César en 1975, Rosa Amalia fundó el Grupo Católico Español Corazón de Jesús Grupo Carismático en la iglesia Little Flower en 1976. Ese grupo continúa funcionando hoy en día, y ha servido como un espacio de apoyo y fe para muchos. Su compromiso de ayudar a los demás se extendió más allá de su comunidad local. En 1986 contribuyó al establecimiento de Misioneros del Camino, un orfanato en Guatemala fundado por la prima de su esposo Julio, la Sra. Leonor Portela.

 La bondad inquebrantable de Rosa Amalia, su amor a Dios y a su familia, y su tremenda fe inspiraban a quienes la rodeaban. Dedicó su vida a recaudar fondos para la División de Hematología y Oncología de lo que hoy es el Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, alimentando a los pobres y brindando apoyo a los padres en duelo. Su legado de servicio desinteresado y compasión vive en los corazones de aquellos a quienes tocó.

 Le sobreviven sus amadas hijas, Mari Tere Rojas y Lourdes María Giménez, así como su difunto hijo, Julio César Portela. También le sobreviven sus yernos, Enrique A. Rojas y Carlos A. Giménez, su amado ángel en la tierra, Aura Estela García, sus nietos, Carlos Julio y Tania Giménez, Nicole y Alejandro Jiménez, Julio y Barby Giménez, Lourdes y Daniel Gato, Ricky y Gloria Rojas, Christopher Rojas y Cristina Peláez, y sus bisnietos, Nicolás Jiménez, Christian Jiménez,  Alexis Giménez, Daniel Gato, Lucas Gato, Ava Giménez, Ali Jiménez, Marcus Gato, Michael Gato, Sofia Rojas, Madison Rojas y Sophía Acosta, junto con todos sus primos, sobrinos, familiares y amigos.

 A Rosa Amalia la extrañaremos profundamente, pero siempre la recordaremos por su hermosa sonrisa, su contagiosa energía positiva y su amor ilimitado por Dios y por todos, especialmente por los niños, junto con su dedicación a su familia y comunidad. Que descanse en paz, reunida con su amado esposo, su hijo y aquellos que se fueron antes que ella, sabiendo que su espíritu de servicio y bondad continuará inspirando a las generaciones futuras.

Rosa Amalia Hernández de Portela, a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2024, on the Feast of the Assumption, surrounded by her loving daughters, son-in-laws, her special angel on earth, Aura, and her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Born on December 17, 1930, in Havana, Cuba, Rosa Amalia leaves behind a legacy of love and service that will be remembered by all who knew her. Her love for God, family, friends, and those in need was evident in all she did.

A scholar and athlete, Rosa Amalia graduated from the esteemed all-girls Catholic School, Las Dominicas Francesas, on June 20, 1948. She met her husband, Julio Francisco Portela Agramonte, her first and only boyfriend, best friend, and the love of her life. Together, they welcomed three children into the world: two daughters, Mari Tere and Lourdes, and a son, Julio Cesar, who sadly passed away at the young age of 15 in an accident in 1975.

In 1961, Rosa Amalia and her family departed their beloved homeland in search of freedom, finding a new home in the United States of America. Her spirit of resilience and commitment to service flourished in her new country, particularly in Miami, Florida, which she loved dearly. There, she joined the staff of Variety Children’s Hospital, now known as Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, serving as the Ward Secretary of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She founded and presided over a committee dedicated to raising funds to support Cuban children and other children in need of healing.

Rosa Amalia was later recruited by a renowned pediatrician to be the Office Manager, where worked until retirement. She formed special connections with the children and provided comfort to parents navigating difficult health situations with their children. 

In the wake of her son Julio Cesar’s tragic and untimely death in 1975, Rosa Amalia founded the Church of the Little Flower Spanish Catholic Group, Corazón de Jesus Grupo Carismático, in 1976, which continues to operate today, creating a space of support and faith for many. Her commitment to helping others extended beyond her local community; in 1986, she contributed to the establishment of Misioneros del Camino, an orphanage in Guatemala, initiated by Leonor Portela, her husband’s cousin.

Rosa Amalia’s unwavering kindness, love of God and family, and tremendous faith inspired those around her. She dedicated her life to raising funds for the Hematology/Oncology Division of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, feeding the poor, and providing support to grieving parents. Her legacy of selfless service and compassion will live on in the hearts of those she touched.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Mari Tere Rojas and Lourdes Maria Giménez, as well as her late son, Julio Cesar Portela. She is also survived by her son-in-laws, Enrique A. Rojas and Carlos A. Giménez, her beloved angel on earth, Aura Estela Garcia, her grandchildren, Carlos Julio and Tania Giménez, Nicole and Alejandro Jiménez, Julio and Barby Giménez, Lourdes and Daniel Gato, Ricky and Gloria Rojas, Christopher Rojas and Cristina Pelaez, and her great-grandchildren, Nicolás Jiménez, Christian Jiménez, Alexis Giménez, Daniel Gato, Lucas Gato, Ava Giménez, Ali Jiménez, Marcus Gato, Michael Gato, Sofia Rojas, Madison Rojas, and Sophía Acosta, along with all her cousins, nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Rosa Amalia will be profoundly missed but forever remembered for her beautiful smile, contagious positive energy, and boundless love for God and all, especially children, along with her dedication to her family and community. May she rest in peace, reunited with her beloved husband, son, and those who left before her, knowing that her spirit of service and kindness will continue to inspire future generations.
