Su carrera cinematográfica comenzó en 1945 con la película mexicana, y rápidamente se convirtió en una figura popular en los westerns de Hollywood, especialmente en producciones de Republic Pictures junto a Roy Rogers. También participó en el clásico Río Bravo (1959), donde compartió pantalla con John Wayne. A lo largo de su vida enfrentó desafíos personales, incluyendo varios matrimonios y una relación cercana con su hija Nina. Su fallecimiento, el 12 de marzo de 1966, oficialmente atribuida a la influenza, ha sido objeto de especulación, y su historia fue recuperada en la novela Find Me in Havana, que narra su vida desde la perspectiva de su hija.

His film career began in 1945 with the film Mexicana, and he quickly became a popular figure in Hollywood westerns, especially in Republic Pictures productions alongside Roy Rogers.
