En días recientes nos llegó la triste noticia del fallecimiento de Juanito Márquez, influyente compositor, guitarrista, arreglista y productor cubano, considerado una figura esencial en la historia de la música cubana. Nacido en Holguín, Cuba, el 4 de julio de 1929, entre sus logros más destacados se encuentra la creación del ritmo “Pa-Cá” en 1964, una fusión innovadora que marcó una etapa singular en la música popular cubana. Este ritmo combinaba elementos del joropo, el merengue y el son oriental.

A lo largo de su carrera, Márquez trabajó con grandes figuras como Bebo Valdés, Cachao, Omara Portuondo, Tito Gómez, Roberto Torres, Paquito Hechavarría, y Gloria Estefan. Fue clave en la producción del álbum Mi tierra de Estefan, para el cual compuso y arregló varios temas, incluyendo “Ayer” y “¡Sí, señor!”. Su bolero “Alma con alma” es considerado un clásico del género filin y una declaración de amor a su esposa, Mirta, con quien compartió más de ocho décadas de vida.

Después de enfrentar restricciones en Cuba por intentar emigrar, logró salir del país en 1969 con ayuda del humorista Guillermo Álvarez Guedes. En España, trabajó como arreglista para la disquera Hispavox, colaborando con artistas como Julio Iglesias y José Luis Perales. Finalmente se estableció en Miami en 1976, donde consolidó su carrera internacional, y donde falleció el 21 de junio de 2025, dejando una huella indeleble en la música cubana.

Farewell to Juanito Márquez (1929-2025)

In recent days we received the sad news of the passing of Juanito Márquez, influential Cuban composer, guitarist, arranger and producer, considered an essential figure in the history of Cuban music. Born in Holguín, Cuba, on July 4, 1929, among his most outstanding achievements is the creation of the rhythm “Pa-Cá” in 1964, an innovative fusion that marked a singular stage in Cuban popular music. This rhythm combined elements of joropo, merengue, and oriental son.

Throughout his career, Márquez worked with great figures such as Bebo Valdés, Cachao, Omara Portuondo, Tito Gómez, Roberto Torres, Paquito Hechavarría, and Gloria Estefan. He was instrumental in the production of Estefan’s album Mi tierra, for which he composed and arranged several songs, including «Ayer» and «¡Sí, señor!». His bolero «Alma con alma» is considered a classic of the filin genre and a declaration of love to his wife, Mirta, with whom he shared more than eight decades of life.

After facing restrictions in Cuba for trying to emigrate, he managed to leave the country in 1969 with the help of comedian Guillermo Álvarez Guedes. In Spain, he worked as an arranger for the Hispavox record label, collaborating with artists such as Julio Iglesias and José Luis Perales. He finally settled in Miami in 1976, where he consolidated his international career, and where he passed away on June 21, 2025, leaving an indelible mark on Cuban music.
